Abstract

1277872 Plate heat exchangers; hot water boilers; burners DELANEY GALLAY Ltd 29 May 1969 [6 June 1968 25 March 1969] 26996/68 and 15655/69 Headings F4A F4S and F4T A heat exchanger comprises a stack of hollow plates made, e.g. of silicon-coated aluminium or stainless steel and each consisting of a pair of plates 36 defining therebetween fluid inlet and outlet chambers 42, 44 interconnected by a U- shaped fluid passage. As shown, said passage is defined by a central rib 38 and may be subdivided by further longitudinally extending ribs (50, Fig. 1) pressed from the plate material, or it may contain secondary heat exchange surface in the form of a corrugated sheet 52 or expanded or perforated metal. The sheet 52 may occupy the bend portion of the U-passage as shown, or it may be omitted at this zone. Alternatively the plate surface may be formed with fluid turbulating protrusions. Further secondary heat exchange surface comprising a corrugated sheet 48 may be provided between adjacent plate pairs. The plates are stacked with the corresponding chambers 42, 44 in alignment to form headers which may be partitioned by transverse baffles. The individual plates together with the secondary heat exchange surface and the passage-forming ribs may be formed as a one-piece casting including a peripheral gasket groove (57, Fig. 4), a plurality of these plates being secured together by tie bolts. The heat exchanger may be used as a forcedflow convection air heater in a vehicle. Alternatively as shown in Fig. 3 it may comprise the component of a waterboiler heated by a burner 54. The boiler comprises a water jacketted flue 56 having a water inlet 66. The jacket is connected by a duct 68 with the inlet header 42 of the heat exchanger and heated water discharges from the heat exchanger through an outlet 70. The burner gases pass upwardly through the flue and through the secondary surface 48 of the heat exchanger. The burner comprises short upright tubes with hexagonal heads 60. Combustion air is passed through the tubes to ignite with fuel entering the burner through an inlet 62 and flowing upwardly around the tubes (arrows 64). A fan may be located beneath the burner to aid combustion air flow and to enable the height of the flue to be reduced.
