Abstract

[Also in Division B7] An axial-flow fan for ventilation, running at a predetermined speed has its blades shaped to provide a vortex stream generating a centrifugal force at its periphery which provides that the radial pressure of the discharged air will equal approximately the static pressure of the ambient fluid into which the air is discharged. The vortex is thereby projected from the fan as a rotating stream having a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the fan. The rotational velocity at the design radius produces a pressure rise thereat which is equal to half the static pressure drop at the entrance to the fan. In a fan having an outer diameter of 23 inches and a hub diameter of 4 inches, the inlet angles of each blade with respect to the rotational plane are 14À14 degrees at the tip, 19À6 degrees at the design radius (8À13 inches) and 55À35 degrees at the hub. The outlet angles are 16-6 degrees at the tip, 22À25 degrees at the design radius and 59À75 degrees at the hub.
