Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A thermal valve for controlling the gas flow to a burner comprises a diaphragm 26 adapted to close a gas orifice 28 and urged to an open position by a spring 27. A rod 29 is urged against the diaphragm by a bimetal strip 16 adapted to be heated by two resistances disposed in grooves in a steatite element 15 to open the valve and connected to the burner control circuit. The action of the bimetallic strip is adjusted by a screw 34, screwed into the strip and abutting the end of the rod. If the current fails the rod can be displaced to open the valve by pushing inwardly a plate 32. The plate remains in this position because the bimetal strip 16 applies the plate against the sides of guide slots in the valve casing. When the current returns the valve is held open by the heated bimetal strip and the plate is returned by a spring 33.
