Abstract

A thermally-actuated valve comprises a housing 1, a ball-valve 20 spring-pressed towards a seating 2, a plunger 19 adapted to displace the ball away from the seating by moving it laterally in relation to said seating, and a thermo-sensitive element operably associated with the plunger adapted to enable the plunger to be displaced so as to permit the ball to approach the seating to close the valve or to urge the ball away from the valve seating so as to open the valve, upon a particular change of temperature. As shown in Fig. 1, the plunger 19 is acted upon by a stainless steel strip, which constitutes the thermo-sensitive element 13, the latter being bowed so as to normally hold the ball off its seating. When a gas pilot light 16 is lit, the strip bows still further so as to permit the ball to seat and close a port leading to atmosphere. An alternative arrangement, the strip 13 may be bowed in the opposite direction, so that when the pilot light is alight, the ball if off its seat and permits the flow of gas to a burner; when the pilot light is extinguished, the ball recedes and the gas flow stops.
