Abstract

A method for the electrostatic precipitation of coating material upon an article consists of producing a jet of coating material formed of fine particles of high kinetic energy, combining at least a portion of said particles to form larger particles whereby the speed of the combined particles is slowed down, accelerating the larger particles and conveying them by means of electrostatic forces towards the article to be coated. In the apparatus shown comprising a spray producing atomizer nozzle 1, Fig. 1, a member 3, formed of wire rings 4 interconnected by radial wires 5 upon which a portion of the spray impacts, forms one of the electrodes required to produce an electrostatic field between the atomizer and the article to be coated and is rotatably and axially movably mounted on the nozzles supply tube 2. The rings 4 and wires 5 are mounted in a plane normal to the axis alpha of the atomizer and are spaced from the nozzle 1 by a plurality of support arms 6. In another embodiment the apparatus of Fig. 1 is modified by providing a plurality of pointed electrodes around the nozzle 1. In yet a further construction additional rings 4 are provided, these being placed in planes normal to the axis a between the rings 4 and the nozzle 1 of Fig. 1. In the apparatus of Fig. 4, a portion of the spray impacts upon a member 3 in the form of wire members 9a arranged radially in a plane normal to the axis alpha and spaced from the nozzle 1. Another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), shows a member 3 comprising a grid of cross wires supported by arms 6. The wires 4 and 5 have a circular crosssection but wires of any other suitable sectionsuch as illustrated in Figs. 5a-5f (not shown)- may be used. Fig. 7 shows an embodiment in which a part of the spray impacts upon three groups of wires 15 arranged in equi-angularly spaced relationship on a cover plate 13 fitted on a rotatably and axially movably mounted cone member 12. Fig. 8 (not shown) shows diagrammatically examples of selected potential differences to be applied at the electrodes of the apparatus. The coating material may be a liquid or a powder whilst the member 3 or its equivalent in all the embodiments is rotated about the fixed nozzle 1 by means not shown.
