A honing device comprises a rotatable body, means for rotating the body about its axis, three circumferentially spaced work-engaging assemblies mounted on the body, means supporting said three assemblies in preselected radial positions on the body relative to the body axis, whereby said three assemblies establish the honing diameter of the device, means for changing the radial position of at least one of said three assemblies to change the honing diameter, a fourth work-engaging assembly mounted on said body and resilient means biasing said fourth assembly radially outward on the body into engagement with a surface engaged by the said three assemblies. A rotatable generally cylindrical body 12 carries stone assemblies 20, 22 and guide assemblies 24, 26. The stone assembly 20 includes a stone 28 mounted on a backing member 30 mounted on a support plate 32 having mounting pins 34, 36, Fig. 8 (not shown). The pins extend into tubular members 38, 40 connected by a member 44; the members 38, 40 are located in bores in the body 12 and have gear teeth 38a, 46a meshing with an elongated gear 16 located in an axial bore in the body 12. The gear 16 can be driven by planetary gearing to move the stone outwardly of the body 12. The stone assembly 22 is similarly constructed, but the spacing of the mounting pins is different from that of the pins 34, 36. The stone assemblies 20, 22 are adjustable by shims. The guide assembly 24 includes a shoe 50, preferably of a relatively soft metal such as bronze, attached to a mounting member 52 having a pair of spaced mounting pins received in bores in the body 12. Shims 58 are interposed between the member 52 and the head 64 of a rod 62 located in a bore 66. The rod is urged outwardly of the body 12 by a spring 70 maintained under compression by a screw 74 threaded into the end of the rod and passing through a washer 76 engaging a shoulder 78. The guide assembly 26 is similarly constructed but is not resiliently urged. Its position on the body 12 is adjusted by shims 58 interposed below the mounting member 61 and the body 12.
