Abstract

1,114,619. Balancing. NORTON CO. 3 May, 1966 [24 May, 1965], No. 19396/66. Addition to 968,558. Heading F2U. In a balancing apparatus of the type described in the parent Specification 968,558, wherein a rotatable assembly 16 including an element such as a grinding-wheel 20 is normally supported for rotation about a fixed axis by engagement with a rotatable support 13 and is moved axially away from the support 13 for balancing during which it is supported by a resilient rod 21, additional support and stabilizing means 40 are provided to prevent excessive whirling during balancing. The support comprises a shoe 48 urged by mechanical or fluid spring means (55) towards an extension 31 of the rotatable assembly. A stop (51) prevents the shoe 48 engaging the extension 31 when the rotating assembly engages the support 13. As shown, the shoe 48 is fast with a lever 47 pivoted on a fixed block 45 and a helical compression spring (55) acts between the block and lever 47 to urge the shoe 48 towards the extension 31. The rate of the spring 45 is negligible compared with the spring rate of the rod 21 and thus has negligible effect on the balancing.
