Abstract

1,037,682. Grippers for lifting articles. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. Sept. 6, 1962 [Sept. 8, 1961], No. 32341/61. Heading B8H. The jaws 10, 11, Fig. 1, of a device for gripping and lifting irregularly shaped articles are provided with members 29 which are displaceable to a limited extent to compensate for the irregularities in the load. The gripper is rotated about an axis A-A by rams 5, 6 which operate a rack and pinion gear. The jaws 10, 11, which are attached to a member 17 by links 20, 21, are rotated about an axis B-B by rams 12, 13 (not shown), and closed by rams 22. The gripping heads are attached to the rod 46 of a piston 47, Fig. 3, which moves in an hydraulic cylinder 48. Conduits 52, 57 interconnect the cylinders through valves 53-56 and 58-61. If one of the rods 46 is moved to the left in Fig. 3 by contacting a load, fluid displaced from the left-hand side of the piston passes into the other three cylinders and moves their pistons to the right. This movement of liquid continues until all the members are gripping the load with equal pressure. Any of the gripping members may be isolated by closing appropriate valves. A pressure sensitive element which prevents further closure of the jaws may be incorporated in the conduit 57 to limit the pressure which can be applied to a load. In a further embodiment the jaws may be either fixed, or move towards each other in finite steps, the gripping members being moved towards and away from each other by a hydraulic ram which acts on all of them simultaneously.
