Abstract

[Also in Group XXV] A device for tensioning wires 8 used in prestressed concrete, comprises a hydraulic cylinder 1 in which is slidably mounted a piston 2, the cylinder having a head-piece 4 round the periphery of which are spaced wedge-shaped slots 24 within each of which are slidably disposed two wedge-shaped jaws 3 for gripping therebetween a pair of the wires, each jaw 3 having a groove 26 on its gripping surface. The jaws 3 are pressed into the slots 24 by a body 11 which is moved by means of a hydraulic cylinder 9 and the wires 8 are also gripped between a cone 23 and a sleeve 25, the cone being pressed into the sleeve by a hydraulic piston 5 movement of which is under the control of a throttling valve 7. Each groove 26 is preferably defined by two planes, Fig. 4 (not shown), which are at an obtuse angle to one another so that the pair of wires gripped therebetween are presesed against each other; the two planes may be replaced by an arcuate surface. The hydraulic cylinders are supplied with liquid, e.g. oil, from a container 18 by a pump 17, the oil passing through a distributor 19 and a tube 16 to the device; the distributer controls the oil flow by means of a by-pass valve 21 and a pressure relief valve 20. In operation of the device the wires 8 are passed between the cone 23 and the sleeve 25 and are then respectively inserted in pairs between the pairs of jaws 3, the wires being preliminarily secured in position by a lock 10 located on the body 11. Oil is then sequentially fed to the cylinder 9 for clamping the wires to the headpiece 4, to the cylinder 2 for tensioning the wires, the cylinder 2 being under the control of a throttling valve 6, and to the piston 5 for moving the cone 23 towards the sleeve 25. When the device is to be removed from the wires the valve 21 is opened allowing the piston 5, the body 11 and the jaws 3 to be spring-returned to their original position. To facilitate opening of the jaws 3 the gripping surfaces 27 thereof may have a wave formation.
