Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In an hydraulic system wherein an hydraulic motor 9 is required to impart stepwise movement to a load having a high inertia, e.g. a workpiece gripped by manipulator tongs during forging, the supply to, and exhaust from opposite sides 8, 10 of the motor are cut-off at the end of a step by closure of a valve 2, the consequent build-up in pressure on the exhaust side 10, due to the inertia of the load, being relieved through a pressure-limiting retardation valve 14 and a by-pass line 15 to the supply side 8. The system thus causes the supply and exhaust sides 8, 10 of the motor to remain under a residual pressure so that when the next step is initiated by opening of the valve 2, the pressure in the exhaust side collapses while the supply side is still under an initial pressure. When the valve 2 is opened, a valve 3 is also opened so that exhausted liquid by-passes the limiting valve 14 and a non-return valve 13 to flow to a return line 12. A non-return valve 1 in the by-pass line 15 is opened when the valve 2 is closed. The motor 9 may be a double-acting piston and cylinder type or, as shown, a rotary motor. The system described is duplicated to enable stepwise movement of the motor to be reversed. The valves 1, 2, 3 may be electrically or mechanically operated.
