Abstract

1,037,556. Variable resistors. PAINTON & CO. Ltd. May 8, 1964 [May 22, 1963], No. 20322/63. Heading H1S. [Also in Division H2] A potentiometer of the lead-screw type comprises a resistive element 16 which may be in the form of an insulating bar on which is wound or coated the resistive material or may be a bar of high-resistivity material. Electrical connection for the element 16 is provided by end clips 15 bent up from beryllium copper strip and having resilient fingers 18, 33 defining between them a socket in which the element 16 is gripped, the fingers 18 being staggered with respect to the fingers 33 to give a uniformly low resistance over the end portions of the element 16. The wiper (Fig. 2, not shown) comprises a U-shaped resilient metal strip 20 having a limb 23 which bears against the resistive element and having a dimple 25 which engages the thread of a lead screw 5. Electrical connection to the wiper is made by a member 27 against which a limb 26 of the wiper bears. The components of the potentiometer are enclosed in a box of thermoplastic material comprising two halves suitably recessed to accommodate the element 16, the lead screw 5 and the member 27 respectively.
