Abstract

An annular filter element 16, Fig. 2 (not shown), is disposed within a blower impeller and supported by the impeller blades 15 for rotation with the impeller. The number of blades is greater than would be the case if the impeller were not provided with a filter element, it being found that the air flow is thereby increased. For an impeller having a diameter between 4 and 16 inches, the number of blades may be between 100 and 320 and preferably is between 130 and 220. The radial depth of the blades and the thickness of the filter element increase with the impeller diameter. The filter element which may comprise fibres of polyester or acrylic plastics, paper, cloth, glass, nylon or steel wool or may be of polyurethane foam, reduces the noise of the blower. Preferably, the blades 15 are forwardly inclined at 35 to 55 degrees, and the blades may be divided into sections separated by circumferentially extending bands 22. The impeller comprises a back plate 17 and a front flange 20.
