Abstract

1,036,141. Change-speed gear; belt gear. HONEYWELL Inc. Jan. 15, 1963 [Jan. 16, 1962], No. 1822/63. Headings F2D, F2Q and F2U. A change-speed gear for driving the chart of a recording apparatus comprises pinions 62, 106, 130 continuously driven at different speeds and selectively moved laterally by control means into mesh with output pinions 328, 324, 360 coupled to rotate together on a shaft 14 and interlock means which prevent meshing of more than one gear pair. As shown, two similar gears 532, 534 are arranged in series. The pinion 62 of the first gear is driven from an electric motor 38 through a belt gear 42, 48, 46 and pinion 52 whilst the pinions 106, 130 are driven at a 10: 1 reduction ratio from the pinions 62, 106 respectively through gears 88, 114. The coupled output pinions 328, 342, 360 of the first gear drive, through a belt gear 372, 374, 376, permanently meshed pinions 378 . . . 404 of which the pinions 380, 388, 396, 404 are laterally movable into mesh with coupled output pinions 474, 488, 500, 504. The pinions 62, 106, 130, 380, 388, 396, 404 are mounted between pairs of plates, e.g. plates 58, 74 for the pinion 62, which on depression of push buttons 160 ... 164, 458 ... 464 pivot about a shaft 16 to move the pinions laterally into mesh with the output gears. The pairs of plates are held in the depressed position by a spring clip 184, Fig. 4, engaging a shaft 20. The interlock means comprises an inextensible tape 198 which alternately passes round rollers 174, 192, 196, 258, 262, 266, 270 fast with each pair of plates and rollers 200, 202, 260, 264, 268 fast with the cosing. The ends of the tape 198 and an intermediate portion between the two gears are secured to the cosing so that during establishment of a new ratio the loop of tape round the roller fast with the pair of plates being moved is extended and the loop round the roller of the establishing mechanism of the previous ratio is contracted and diengages that ratio. The gear pinions and positive driving belt pulleys may be made of a glass-filled nylon material with 4% molybdenumdisulphide added, and the pairs of plates are made of molybdenumdisulphide filled nylon. The output pinions are coupled by facial pins thereon engaging holes in neoprene washers.
