Abstract

Polymeric fat acid products containing iron and/or phosphorus as impurities are treated with a 40 to 80% by weight aqueous solution of phosphoric acid to reduce the iron and/or phosphorus content of said products. The quantity of phosphoric acid employed is generally 1 to 3% by weight of the product to be treated and said treatment is then generally conducted immediately following the polymerization reaction in the polymerization reaction vessel at 250 DEG to 300 DEG F. for 1/2 to 3 hours. The treatment is of particular value when the polymeric fat acids have been prepared in the presence of clays and lithium compounds.
