Abstract

1,035,406. Tobacco-packaging machines. ROSE BROTHERS (GAINSBOROUGH) Ltd. June 16, 1965 [June 20, 1964], No. 25622/64. Heading B8C. In a tobacco-packaging machine of the kind in which a wrapper is first pressed into a pocket of an intermittently movable pocket wheel to form it into an open channel with end portions projecting beyond the sides of the pocket, the projecting end portions then being folded inwardly to form an open-topped box and the wheel moving to a filling station to present the box to the mouth of a press chamber from which a charge of tobacco is pressed into the box by a reciprocating plunger, each pocket of the wheel comprises a movable base and means at the filling station for lifting the base prior to the filling action, to cause the open-topped box to embrace the mouth of the press chamber, the base being lowered during the pressing action of the plunger. A charge of tobacco 10 is delivered from a hopper 11 to a chamber 12, having two side walls 13 and two end walls 14, 16 which are swung by cam means prior to filling, to form a parallel sided press chamber, Fig. 3 (not shown), for the plunger 53. As the pocket wheel, carrying a wrapper 32, folded to box form, in a pocket 33, comes to rest under the charge of tobacco, the leading edge of the wrapper being held down under walls 13 by oscillating fingers 36, see also Fig. 2 (not shown), the base 37 of the pocket is driven up against the action of springs 42 on a pair of pins 39 secured to the base by tappets 43 actuated by cam means, to pass the " box " over the mouth of the press chamber. The charge of tobacco is then pressed into the box by the plunger, the base 37 receding to its original position with the plunger. The pocket wheel then revolves to deliver the partially wrapped package for subsequent final folding operations (not described).
