Packeting cigarettes and the like in cartons.- A packing machine comprises in combination means operable automatically to wrap batches of cigarettes in coverings of foil or like material and means operable automatically to arrange two or more of the wrapped batches side by side in an outer carton or container, preferably of the slide and shell type. The cigarettes are fed from a hopper (not shown), which may be of the type described in Specifications 216,326, 238,355, 263,521, and 267,231, by a pusher 13 on an endless conveyer, and pass through folding mechanism, for instance of the type described in Specification 165,891, for enveloping a batch in a block ended container, open at the rear end. The open end is closed, preferably by mechanism such as is described in Specification 214,792, and the package arrives between depending plates 15, 16 arranged on a member 17. The member 17 moves the package away so that the next package is received between plates 16, 18. The packages are now side by side, separated by the plate 16, and are moved into the path of a pusher 19, which moves them on to a partly folded slide on the conveyer 1. The members 17, 19 are reciprocated by the cams 23, 33 respectively, and are raised during their return movements by bellcrank levers 29, 37 to lift them above the paths of the wrapped batches of cigarettes and of the member 17 respectively. The slides 3 are stacked between vertical guide members and rest upon a reciprocating plate 7 provided with pusher tooth 8 which forces them one at a time into the grip of feed rollers 9. Curved plates 10 bind up the longitudinal edges, and the slide comes to rest between depending walls 38, 39 on a member 40 where it is charged as described by the pusher 19. The member 40 is raised as a pusher piece 2 on the conveyer chain 1 approaches and removes the charged slide to apparatus such as is described in Specifications 169,341, and 266,834, [Class 18, Boxes &c.], for inserting the slides into shells, the filled cartons being finally removed and placed in outer containers. In an alternative arrangement, the wrapped batches of cigarettes may be moved one at a time on to a slide of a slide and shell packet, the slide being moved in steps to permit two batches being located side by side upon the slide. Further, the batches may be fed. into a packet in which the slide is already inserted partly or wholly into the shell. Specifications 205,226 and 275,276 also are referred to.
