495,296. Packeting-machines. CHALMERS, J. W., KIDD, D. B., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Oct. 29, 1937, No. 11762/38. Divided out of 495,275. [Class 94 (i)] In order to compress a batch of cigarettes before insertion into a container, it is conveyed to the inserting position in a pocket having walls moving in directions normal to one another. As shown, twenty cigarettes are fed into a compression chamber comprising fixed walls 13, 14 and movable walls 15, 16. At the beginning of the cycle, the walls are in the position shown, the wall 16 being in line with a fixed wall 27 parallel with the wall 14, and the wall 15 retracted from the wire of the fixed end 28 of the wall 27. The pocket is one of a series mounted on an intermittently rotating carrier, and, during the periods of rotation, fixed cams 20, 25 move the sides to compress the batch. The side 15 is first moved inwards until it is in line with the end 28, and the side 16 then moves the required distance towards the side 14. The batch may be thrust by a plunger through a mouth-piece into a packet as described in Specification 495.295. In a modified form, the compression chamber may be fixed and the sides actuated by movable cams. Specification 238,355, [Class 94 (i)], also is referred to.
