A chain wheel pedal crank 16 is connected by channel-section toggle links 20, 21, and pivot-pins 23, 24, 27 to a cross-bar 28 strapped by a U bolt 32 to the steering head 17. A pedal arm 34 pivoted to the toggle joint mounts a pedal 35 which traces an ellipse having a nearly vertical major axis, and a similar toggle linkage and pedal arm is provided on the other side of the cycle, the lowest point reached by the pin 24 being as shown on Fig. 2. A bolt 22 threaded in a block 25 and nut 26 permits adjustment of the linkage, and guards 38 are provided for preventing clothes from being entrapped. Rubbing plates 40, 41 of nylon carried respectively by link 20 and pedal arm 34 oppose inward swinging of the arm 34 when downward pressure is exerted on the pedal 35, and forward limit stops 36 are provided. In operation, movement of the two sets of links from one to the other of the positions shown in Fig. 2 results in rotation of the chain wheel and propulsion.
