Abstract
1401727 Cycle propulsion CYCLE-DRIVE CORP 21 Aug 1973 39404/73 Heading B7E Bicycle propulsion is by means of treadles 47 driving the back wheel via a chain 33, the chain passing at its front around sprocket 31, the drive between each treadle and the sprocket consisting of, for the right hand side of the cycle, a lever 46R reciprocatable with the treadle 47R and which is pivoted at 45R to a connector 43R in turn pivoted at 44R to an advance crank arm 42R, this latter being connected by a one-way clutch 41R to a bifurcated crank arm 34R, the clutch allowing rotation of arm 42R relative to arm 34R only in the direction of the rotation of arm 34R about sprocket drive axis DA, and there being between connector 43R and arm 42R a spring 54R which tends to maintain an angle #. In use if the effort applied to treadle 47R does not overcome spring 54R the drive force is transmitted from the connector 43R to crank arm pin 39R, but should the drive force overcome the spring and reduce the angle # then the force is transmitted from the connector to the pivot 44R of the arm 42R. The drive on the left hand side of the cycle is identical but designated with reference letters L and drives the sprocket directly. The pedals on the treadles may be moved between two positions, see. Fig. 3.
