Abstract
A support such as glass is first coated with a layer of chromium, then a material such as silicon monoxide which is inert to the chromium, and finally with a magnetic material such as a nickel iron alloy the coatings being applied by vapour deposition. The glass is heated to 320 DEG C. prior to the coating process which is regulated so that the evaporation steps overlap. The chromium and silicon monoxide layers are each 100 <\>rA thick and the 80% Nickel 20% iron alloy layer is 1-3 microns thick. Masks may be used to produce the required pattern e.g. for magnetic storage devices.
