Abstract

1,034,584. Surgical swabs. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. Feb. 14, 1964 [Feb. 15, 1963], No. 6261/64. Heading A5R. An absorbent swab comprises a flexible thermoplastic stick 16 at least one end of which is heat-fused and carries an absorbent wad 17, fibres of which are embedded in the stick. The stick is hollow and has shallow longitudinal outer ribs 25 and is made of polypropylene, high density polythene or a vinyl polymer. Opposite sides of each end of the stick are heat-fused and formed with transverse grooves 22 by passage between electrically heated jaws 33, 34 each having a ribbed surface, the minimum distance between the jaws being slightly less than the outer diameter of the stick. Wad material e.g. cotton or rayon is wound on each fused end of the stick before it solidifies, so that fibres become embedded in the stick and thus secure the wad to the stick. In a machine for assembling the swabs, sticks are fed at a station w to peripheral recesses 32 in a coaxial pair of intermittently rotating wheels 29. The ends of the stick pass between the heated jaws 33, 34 at a station x and wad material is fed to the ends of the sticks at a station y and formed on the sticks at a station z. In an alternative form of swab, the ends of the sticks (Fig. 11, not shown) are fused by a flame to form peripheral end flanges, the wad material being wound on the ends of the sticks before they solidify.
