Abstract
1,034,016. Ignition systems. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 1, 1964 [July 4, 1963], No. 27178/64. Heading FIB. An ignition system includes an engine driven magnetic switch for controlling the supply of high voltage energy to the sparking plug, the magnetic switch comprising a two part primary winding 10, 10<SP>1</SP> connected to a source of alternating voltage having a very high frequency as compared with the maximum speed of revolution of the engine each portion of the primary winding being arranged on a different one of two external limbs of a three limbed core 11 of ferromagnetic material, a two part secondary winding 12, 12<SP>1</SP> each portion of which is arranged on a different one of the external limbs the portions of one of the windings being wound in opposite directions as regards the flux through the central limb of the core and a movable armature driven 13 by the engine so as to periodically change materially the reluctance of the magnetic circuit between the central limb and one or each of the external limbs of the core so that the alternating voltage applied to the primary winding transiently induces a voltage in the secondary winding. As shown when the switch 8 is caused to conduct the capacitor 6 discharges through the primary winding 2 of the ignition coil 1. The alternating voltage across the entire secondary winding 12, 12<SP>1</SP> is applied to the base-emitter circuit of the transistor 14 connected to the switch device 8. The switch device 8 may be a Thyristor. The source of alternating voltage is an oscillator including a p-n-p transistor 17. In order to avoid unwanted re-firing and/or premature firing of the controlled rectifier unidirectional voltage pulses are produced with the aid of a rectifier and from the current pulses through the controlled rectifier which voltage pulses are applied in the reverse direction to an amplifying element included in the control circuit of the controlled rectifier. A modification in which a control voltage is applied from the magnetic switch to a transistor through a zener diode is described. It is stated that the electronic switch may be a gas filled discharge tube.
