Abstract

<PICT:1033100/C6-C7/1> In the process of nickel plating disclosed in the parent Specification using a batch containing 500 to 700 g. per litre of nickel sulphamate, plating is first-effected at a high C.D. giving a dull plate and then at a C.D. below 70 A.S.F. giving a bright plate. No brightening agents are required. A number of wires or strips are fed side by side over a roller 3 and are led individually under rollers 4 immersed at different depths in the plating back. The strips pass between pairs of anodes which are more widely spaced at the end of the bath to reduce C.D. to the required value. Resistors 12 may also be included to adjust this figure. In alternative arrangements (not illustrated) shields may be used in the second stage (Fig. 3, 4), the last groups of anodes are mounted remote from the wire (Figs. 5 and 6). "Thief" cathodes to control and regularize the plating as alternatives to shields are refused to. The initial C.D. may be 300 A. S. F. or more and then reduced to 30 A.S.F. within progressively or abruptly.
