Abstract

Sufficient weft for two picks is drawn from a stationary bobbin and blown into a shuttle; or only part of it may be blown in, the remainder being trailed into the shed when the shuttle is picked. A weft measuring device is mounted on each end of the slay to feed an associated shuttle, which enters the top cell of a drop box at is replenishing end of the loom and the bottom cell at the other end. Measuring is effected by a conical drum driven by a clockwork motor which is continually rewound by the oscillations of the slay; the motor rapidly makes rather more than one revolution when tripped on arrival of the shuttle in the top cell of the drop box, the length of weft delivered being determined by gearing between the motor and the drum and being equal to two picks plus the distance between the nozzle and the selvedge. When the first pick has been laid in the shed, the weft is cut at the selvedge and the end is drawn back to the mouth of the nozzle by turning the motor backwards by the amount that its forward rotation exceeded one revolution; to prevent the wrong weft from being cut, a guide thread operated by a heald raises the weft into contact with a fixed guide thread to bring it to the height of the cutter. Air pressure is generated by bellows operated by a spring which is loaded by movement of the slay and tripped by arrival of the shuttle in the top cell of the box. In a modification, the measuring devices are mounted on the fixed part of the loom. The weft being blown into a flexible tube before arrival of the shuttle, and then blown into the shuttle by another nozzle on the end of the tube; the air pressure may pulsate to increase the tractive effort on the web; the nozzle for blowing the weft into the flexible tube may be omitted.
