Abstract
1,032,791. Laminates and laminating. FIBREGLASS Ltd. Aug. 1, 1963 [Aug. 24, 1962], No. 32571/62. Heading B5N. A laminate comprises a main layer of mineral fibre nodules such as glass fibre nodules bonded together by a bonding agent and having one or both surfaces covered by a thinner layer of flexible material. The nodules are pieces chopped from a mineral fibre bat, board or sheet whose fibres have been bonded by a bonding agent, and the flexible material may be a glass fibre tissue, a scrim cloth or canvas. Suitable bonding agents are thermosetting resins such as phenol-formaldehyde, thermoplastic resins such as polyvinyl acetate or a bituminous material. The laminate is made by placing the flexible material on an endless foraminous or other conveyer, placing the nodules on the layer, applying a bonding agent, such as a sprayed solution of phenol-aldehyde resin, to the nodules before or after placing them on the layer, adding another flexible layer if required, passing the layers beneath a compressing roller and heating in an oven.
