Battery lamps.-In a pocket or other portable lamp, the battery cells, reflector and bulb holder, contacts, switch, and wiring are bound together as one article by a wrapping or cover of paper, cardboard, &c. This combination may be discarded when the battery is exhausted, only the bulb being preserved. In the arrangement shown, the casing 4 is grooved internally to hold a closing-plate 15, the reflector 11 being held partly by tongues 14 passing through and under the plate 15, and partly by turning the straight edges of the reflector over the edges of the casing. Alternatively, the reflector may be integral with the closing-plate, especially if this is made from pulp ; the reflector is then whitened internally. A switch contact 5 and a switch arm 9, which may be pivoted to a lug on the reflector, are mounted on the closing-plate 15 and are shielded by the projecting edge of the casing. The cells 1, 2, 3 are separated by strips 10 or by a tube around the middle cell. A contact 6 on the negative electrode of the middle cell may engage the centre contact of the bulb. The switch may then be placed in circuit between the reflector and the positive electrode of another cell as shown, or between the opposite poles of the end cells, another electrode being connected to the reflector or casing. If an insulating-tube is placed around the centre contacts of the battery and bulb, the space above the cells may be filled with sawdust and pitch. The cover-plate may, in some cases, be dispensed with and the reflector secured to the pitch, the switch being then placed on the side of the casing. Or the bulb may be at the side of the casing and the switch on its end, and cords or straps for carriage may be provided.
