Abstract

1,031,864. Photo-conductive devices; cathoderay tubes. RANK XEROX Ltd. Dec. 9, 1963 [Dec. 7, 1962], No. 48450/63. Headings H1D and H1K. A photo-conductive insulating material consists of amorphous selenium and at least one heavy metal halide in the mole ratio of up to 20% metal halide to selenium. The heavy metal may consist of Sb, Fe, Zn, Sn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Bi, As, Te, Hg, Ag, Au or Tl. In one example, a mixture of pure selenium and lead bromide was melted (400‹ C.), quenched, dried and vacuum deposited on to an aluminium substrate. Other examples utilizing tin bromide, lead iodide and tin chloride are also described. It is stated that the material may be used in a photographic process which utilizes the persistence of the photo-electric effect after cessation of the radiation and is suitable for use with X-rays and for devices such as orthicon tube, vidicons, image amplifiers and photo-cells.
