Abstract
An explosive composition, resistant to the development of charges of static electricity, comprises ammonium nitrate, an oleaginous fuel, and a product of the reaction of a mixture of secondary and tertiary aliphatic amines with a mixture of high molecular weight fatty acids. Optionally a finely divided metal or metalloid may be present, for example Al, Mg, B, or Si, or alloys thereof. Sodium nitrate may replace part of the ammonium nitrate. The fuel may be diesel oil, fuel oil, vegetable oil, petroleum grease or wax, or a partially nitrated derivative of benzene, toluene, xylene, or naphthalene. Calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate, ammonium carbonate, triethylamine, or piperidine may be added as an acid acceptor to absorb any free nitric acid in the ammonium nitrate. The ammonium nitrate may be pretreated with an antisetting or waterproofing agent, e.g. kieselguhr, kaolinite, the sodium salt of a mixture of methyl and dimethyl naphthalene sulphonic acids, or calcium stearate. The explosives are useful in underground blasting operations where explosive is forced into a borehole through a tube or hose.
