Abstract
Explosives containing ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate or aluminium powder or a mixture thereof are made by incorporating the solid components into a mass gelatinized with a volatile solvent and comprising a double base powder consisting of (a) one or more nitrated carbohydrates and (b) one or more nitric acid esters of polyhydric alcohols, the amount of nitrated carbohydrate being at least 30% of the weight of the double base powder mass; evaporating the volatile solvent, and forming the explosive obtained into a fine granular form. If desired, this fine granular explosive may be pressed into bodies having a density of over 1.1 g./ml. The volatile solvent may be an alcohol, preferably methanol, and the nitrated carbohydrate, nitrocellulose and/or nitrostarch, the nitric acid ester being nitroglycerine. Ammonium nitrate having a screen fineness of at least DIN 50 may be used as starting material and may be moistened with a small amount, e.g. less than 1% by weight, of an oil, preferably a mineral oil. The oxygen balance of the explosive mixture is adjusted, preferably with aluminium powder, to be slightly positive. Explosives are claimed containing 10-30% by weight of a powder mass with a heat of combustion of 1150-1200, preferably 1170 cal./gm., 77 to 64% by weight of ammonium nitrate, and 5.5 to 13.0% by weight of fine aluminium powder to give a slightly positive oxygen balance or alternatively 10 to 30% by weight of a powder mass with a heat of combustion of 1200-1400, preferably 1300 cal./gm., 75 to 61.9% by weight of ammonium nitrate and 7.4 to 14.0% by weight of aluminium powder. These two compositions are pressed into bodies having densities of 1.4 to 1.53 and 1.5 to 1.6 g./ml., respectively.
