Abstract

1,029,662. Welding by fusion. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. March 8, 1965 [March 24, 1964], No. 9759/65. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] In an electron beam welding machine, a rotatable member having two identical workpiece receiving chambers is arranged in an evacuated enclosure and serves to permit withdrawal or insertion of a workpiece while another workpieee is being welded. The chambers 4, 6 have transverse openings 16, 18 providing access for an electron gun 20 and sealed by a valve 22 respectively. The workpieces are supported on devices 80, 82 extending outwardly of the chambers 4, 6. While a workpieee in chamber 4 is being rotated by a motor 92 for welding, a workpiece in chamber 6 is raised by a ram 86 and a cover 12 is removed to allow replacement of the workpiece. After the cover 12 is replaced, chamber 4 is evacuated by a vacuum pump through a passage in valve 22. When welding is complete the gun 20 and the valve 22 are moved outwardly by rams to permit rotation of the member 2 by a rack 76 and pinion 72. Observation windows are provided in the enclosure 1 and the member 2. In a modification the workpieee being welded is movable longitudinally. In a further modification, both the valve and the gun 20 are at the same end of the rotatable member 2 and move parallel to the axis of rotation of the member.
