Abstract

1,032,453. Cutting and welding by fusion. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. April 1, 1963 [April 2, 1962], No. 12789/63. Headings B3R and B3V. [Also in Division H1] In a method of working or welding materials by a beam of charged particles, a vacuum is created in a chamber around the workpiece and a movable beam generator is moved over a slot in the chamber. An electron beam generator 10, Fig. 1, and plate 22 are slid along slot 18 in vacuum chamber 16, while maintaining under the weight of generator 10 and plate 22 together, an air-tight seal between the plate 22 and sealing ring 20. The use of vacuum grease ensures the seal and facilitates movement. In addition, rollers or balls 24 are attached to the generator 10. The plate 22 may be replaced by a thin metal strip which is wound up on reels to move the generator back and forth. In Fig. 4 for welding a joint to close the cylinder 14, the cylinder 14 and the interior of the box structure 40 supporting the generator 10 are both evacuated, seals being provided at 20 and 42.
