Abstract
1,045,405. Removing metal by electron beams. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. July 8, 1963 [July 11, 1962], No. 26904/63. Heading B3V. [Also in Division H1] An electron beam apparatus for machining workpieces 14, 30 in succession, has an evacuated machining chamber 11 sealed from the atmosphere by the workpieces. The beam generator comprises cathode 2, control cylinder 3, anode 4, apertured plate 6, electromagnetic focusing lens 7 and electromagnetic deflection system 8. Vacuum pumps 5, 10 are provided. The workpieces enter through shaft 13 and seal against its inner walls. Shaft 13 has two opposed conveyer belts 15, Fig. 2 (not shown), and is connected at 21, 22, 23 to a vacuum pump. Chamber 11 has a holder 27 manipulated from outside for receiving the workpiece 30 being machined and subsequently delivering it to an exit shaft 24 also provided with opposed conveyer belts and connected to a vacuum pump. The conveyers may run intermittently or continuously. Workpiece 30 may be bored or milled. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the machined workpieces are allowed to drop into an evacuated chamber carried by a rotary turret. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the workpiece 30 is pressed upwards by mechanism 53, 54 against an elastic seal 48 to enclose a chamber which is evacuated by pump 47. A member 45 is then rotated to align a through passage 46 with the electron beam for machining the workpiece. Modifications are described, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), in which the rotary member 45 is emitted and the electromagnetic lens focuses the beam twice, Fig. 6 (not shown). The seal 48 may be a liquid seal or it may be omitted and the vacuum pumps 43, 47 then produce a pressure stage which seals off the machining chamber.
