Abstract

1,028,146. Edge connectors. AMP Inc. Dec. 4, 1964 [Dec. 5, 1963], No. 48025/63. Heading H2E. To avoid wearing of a coating 4<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 2), provided on contact springs 4 and 5 in an edge connector, a second coating 9, 10 provided on the printed circuit board is such that when the circuit board is mated with the connector the length of the surface of the coatings 4<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> swept by the surface of the coatings 9, 10 is greater than the length of the surface of the coatings 9, 10 swept by the surface of the first coatings 4<SP>1</SP>, 51. In the embodiment described, this is done by applying the second coating to the ends of studs 8 which are soldered to the printed circuit board 3. Thus, as the printed board is inserted only the top portion of the studs 8 come into contact with the first coatings 4<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP>. The top of the studs may be grooved (Fig. 4, not shown), to provide guide channels for the contacts 4, 5 and the ribs 7 which support the printed circuit board 3 whilst in the connector may be provided with projections to ensure correct alignment. The coatings may be of gold, rhodium, palladium or tin.
