Abstract

1,087,861. Two-part couplings; binding posts. SEALECTRO CORPORATION and S. T. DEAKIN. April 16, 1964 [April 18, 1963], No. 15400/63. Heading H2E. [Also in Division B6] An electrical connector having an insulating body 10 has a contact formed as a metallic coating on the body and associated with a separately constructed resilient contact 15 is secured to part of the coated contact at 16 so that a co-operating contact is gripped between it and part of the coated contact. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, annular support 10 is formed of a photo-sensitive glass plate. Sockets 11 are made in the plate by covering it with a negative exposing it to ultra-violet light and etching with hydro-fluoric acid. Copper strips 12 and the linings for the holes 11 are then printed on the surface by any of the known techniques used for decorating china. Further contacts 15 are then etched in linked form, Fig. 2 (not shown), from a sheet of rhodium-plated beryllium copper or beryllium nickel using conventional etching techniques, and welded on to the copper strips 12 at 16, after which the ties 14 between them are removed and their ends 17 are bent to lie within the copper-plated holes 11. A cover-plate 20 is then formed with holes 21 in a similar manner, and the two plates are riveted together through holes 22. Plug pins or wires can then be inserted and gripped in copper-lined holes 11 by contacts 17. The whole assembly may be mounted in an aperture in a printed circuit board and contact ends 23 soldered to the printed tapes. A stack of plates may be mounted vertically above one another with contacts only in some of the holes 11, Fig. 3 (not shown). When pins are inserted some of the pins make contact with the coated sockets of one plate and others with those of other plates. Thus the ends of metal strips 12 are staggered at different levels for ease of connection. The sockets may be arranged in rows, the contact strips being originally produced in the form of a grid, Fig. 5 and 6 (not shown). In a further embodiment, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), a plug of the type shown in Fig. 8 fits into a central aperture of the socket connector and pins (46) fit between the copperplated contacts (38) and the etched contacts (42), lip (45) being formed to provide guide surfaces for the pins.
