Abstract

948,391. Two-part couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION. Oct. 16, 1961 [Nov. 4, 1960], No. 37024/61. Heading H2E. A connector for releasably connecting a flat multi-conductor cable 11 to a rigid element such as a printed circuit board comprises interfitting L-shaped insulating supports 20, 21 provided with a recess 37 to receive the board and a plurality of contact fingers the opposite ends of which, 41, 42 and 47, 50, resiliently protrude from the side walls of recess 37 and the top surface of the supports to engage aligned conductors on the board and cable 11 respectively..The ends 47, 50 are in staggered rows clamped between supports 20, 21, which are housed in a metal shell 14, and lie in and project above staggered recesses 46, 49 in the supports to engage bared zones 64 of the conductors 62 of the cable 11 when the latter is placed over them. Unused conductors are not bared. In order to insulate successive conductors more securely from each other at the connector, aligned zones of alternate conductors beyond the point at which they make connection to their respective contacts are punched out of the cable 11 as indicated at 66. The cable 11 has holes 65 in a set pattern which fit over removable pins 59 set in the same pattern in holes 60 in support 20. The pattern can be varied, and only cables having holes in the same pattern as the pins in the support can be used. The cable 11 is clamped in position by a cover 29 hinged on support 20 and retained in the closed position by means of spring clip 70 riveted to the cover and releasably engaging protruding ledges on the opposite ends of shell 14. In a modification, one set of contacts may be omitted.
