In a tube for ultra-violet detection having photo-emissive bare metal electrodes, hydrogen chloride at a partial pressure of from 0À001 to 1 mm. Hg is added to a gas filling containing hydrogen. The tube described comprises loop electrodes of molybdenum wire supported 0À2 mm. apart by chrome-iron pins in an envelope having a diameter and length of approximately 2À5 cm. and filled with a mixture of helium, 10% hydrogen at a partial pressure of 100 mm. Hg and hydrogen chloride at a partial pressure of 0À02 mm. Hg.
