Abstract

1,027,243. Multi-compartment trays. MULTICUP AUTOMATION CO. Inc. Nov. 23, 1962, No. 44494/62. Heading B8P. [Also in Division B6] A tray for packaging fruit, chocolates &c. comprises paper or like sheet material folded from a flat blank (Fig. 5, not shown) into a plurality of cup-like receptacles 13 with fluted sides 17, the flutes extending upwardly to tops 25 which are integrally attached to the top of other such receptacles in a flat top plane, and the bottoms 15 of the receptacles being separate from each other. The tops are joined by narrow portions 27 which are fluted and folded downwardly to allow the flutes of adjacent receptacles to interfit. Thermoplastic material incorporated in the sheet, and the use of heat during folding, help to retain the shape of the flutes which may be rounded, V-shaped or pleated. The receptacles may be cylindrical. In a modification the portions 27 and the sides of the receptacles under these portions are unfluted. The trays may be folded singly or in multiples by dies which move towards each other as the blank or blanks is or are pressed into them.
