Abstract
1,026,659. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1964 [Jan. 30, 1964], No. 51761/64. Heading B6F. Machines with types upon spherical surfaces; type-selecting mechanisms; power assisted type actions.-This subject-matter is identical with that in Specification 1,026,658. Wear compensation apparatus.-The wear compensating apparatus 10, Fig. 2, is designed to compensate for any wear in the rotary character selection mechanism, e.g. dilation of tape 26 and becomes effective when the type head 11 is rotated clockwise by five units and the case shift mechanism has not been actuated. The apparatus includes a dual pawl clutch means comprising a pair of pawls 57, 58, Fig. 3, mounted on arms 61 of an annular hub 62 rigidly attached to the type head spindle 12 and normally engaging a toothed flange 55 on a pulley 17 through the intermediary of a spring 66 to provide a rigid drive connection between the pulley 17 and spindle 12. The type head 11 moves counterclockwise under the influence of tape 26 or clockwise under the influence of spiral spring 21. When wear has taken place and the spiral spring 21, Fig. 4, has rotated the type head 11 five units in a clockwise direction, in response to the depression of a key, a stud 68 on the pawl 58 engages a stop plate 67 to pivot the pawl 58 out of engagement with teeth 56 on the flange 55 so as to disengage the pulley 17 from the type head 11, which remains in its proper typing position, but the pulley continues to rotate clockwise under the bias exerted by the spiral spring 21 until all slack in the tape has been taken up. As the rotary selection mechanism is de-energized and the pulley begins to rotate counterclockwise to its home position the pawl 58 drops into the teeth 56 on the pulley 17 at the adjusted position.
