In a shield type tunnelling machine spoil is removed from the pressure chamber at the front of the machine through a pneumatic conveyer of the cellular wheel type that is so mounted in the bulkhead of the chamber that the wheel of the conveyer acts as an air lock. The spoil falling from the buckets of a boring head rotating within the leading end of the chamber in the shield is delivered from the adjacent lower rear part of the head by a short endless conveyer to a hopper located within the chamber and to be discharged into the wheel of the conveyer.
