Abstract
An article of copper and/or silver is made by electrodepositing the metal on to an aluminium mould and then dissolving out the mould by an alkaline solution containing at least 0.1 g/l of chromate ions. Typically a wave guide is made by anodizing a polished aluminium mould core, electrolessly plating with silver from a bath containing per litre Silver nitrate 3.75 g 38% by volume ammonia solution 3.75 g 40% by volume formaldehyde 5 nl and then electroplating with copper from a sulphate bath followed by dissolution of the aluminium core in a solution at 100 DEG C. containing 20 g/l NaOH and 25 g/l Na2CrO4. Alternatively the aluminium mould may be pickled in a 3:1 mixture of HNO3 and HF followed by electroplating with copper from a pyrophosphate bath followed by dissolution of the aluminium core. The article may be protected from discoloration by connecting it cathodically towards the end of the dissolution as by applying an appropriate voltage or by contacting it with a piece of pure aluminium. Darkening of the article caused by prolonged immersion in the dissolution bath may be removed by a hydrochloric acid dip.
