A magnetic garnet has the composition 3[(1 - x)Y 2 O 3 xGd 2 O 3 ] 5[( 1 - y)Fe 2 O 3 .yAl 2 O 3 ] where x lies between 0À08 and 0À12 and y lies between 0À19 and 0À26. In preparation the pure ingredients are ground, presintered at 1000‹ C. for 2 hours, reground, mixed with polyvinyl alcohol, pressed into shape under 1 ton/cm.<SP>2</SP> and sintered at 1380‹ C. for 3 hours.
