Abstract

In a process wherein an aqueous coating composition is applied to a support, e.g. paper or a film carrying a set and dried photographic emulsion layer, leaving uncoated margins at the edges of the support, a jet of steam is directed on to these areas of the support where the edges of the coating will lie before the coating solution is applied, so as to wet or to wet and heat these areas. Specified coating compositions are aqueous solutions of gelatin and of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. The process is stated to reduce the thickness of the "edge bead" normally formed when the liquid coating dries.
