[Also in Division D1] Material R in web form is dried or heattreated by upward passage through a chamber A in contact with heated particles G, e.g. of sand or ballotini, from a hopper B which move downwardly in a manner controlled by a countercurrent of heated gas introduced into the chamber through nozzles N at such velocity as to impede in a controlled manner the downward passage of the particles. The nozzles N project the heated gas on to both sides of the material before the gas passes upwardly and the particles are continuously recirculated through ducting K as by currents of air, in which ducting heat exchangers Z are mounted. Heaters O are mounted in the walls of the chamber and the material inlet and outlets have seals S and U.
