Abstract
1,025,289. Winding bobbins; doffing. DOWSMITH Inc. Sept. 16, 1963 [Sept. 25, 1962], No. 36376/63. Headings DID and D1J. [Also in Division B8] A continuous strand of material to be wound on a rotating cylindrical member is secured to the member by means of a circumferentially extending slot formed between the end face of the member and a detachable end plate in which the strand may be caught and wound initially. Multifilament glass strand 22 is wound on a cardboard tube 23 on one of three cyclindrical winding members 1 mounted upon a turntable 3 and is distributed in crossing convolutions thereon by the rotation and reciprocation of strand traversing means 21. The winding members 1 are driven simultaneously by means of belts 6, 4. When one member is filled the turntable rotates automatically through one-third of a revolution to bring an empty member into the winding position; simultaneously with this action, a guide member 33 pivotally mounted on a pin 34 moves to catch the strand and to guide it into a circumferential slot 37 provided between the end of the member 1 and a dished plate 39 held magnetically to the member as shown in Fig. 5. Pins 42 limit the depth to which the strand may enter the slot and ensure even winding of the strand. An annular spigot (Fig. 6 not shown) may be provided on the end of the member 1 as an alternative for the same purpose. A hand brake 15 is provided to arrest the wound member without stopping the rotation of the other member so that the package may be removed and replaced by an empty tube. A foot brake 11 serves similarly to arrest the member in the winding position in order to initiate the whole winding operation. In this case the strand is inserted manually in the slot, the winding member brought gradually up to speed and since much of this initially wound strand is not properly attenuated a transfer operation to the succeeding winding member may follow directly.
