1294752 Continuous winding TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 16 Nov 1970 [19 Nov 1969] 54380/70 Heading D1J A continuous winding machine has two package supports 1, 7 (Fig. 1) driven by peripheral frictional contact with a roller 12, a slotted traverse roller 16 having two traverse slots 19, 20, one adjacent each package support, connected by transfer slots 21, 22, and a guide 26 for centring the yarn with respect to either package support and movable to transfer the yarn from one traverse slot to the other through one of the transfer slots. Fig. 4 shows the developed shape of the slots in the traverse roller, in which sections A and B are adjacent the packages, and the transfer slots 21, 22 have portions 58, 60 perpendicular to the axis of the roller. During passage of the yarn through these portions, it is caught up by notches 29, 30 (Fig. 1) on the package support. A section through the traverse roller (Fig. 5) shows that it comprises a thin outer shell, in which the slots are formed, a number of parallel rods 61 preventing too deep penetration of the yarn, and radially inwardly extending pins 62 assisting the passage of yarn around the turning points of the slots. So that all packages wound on the machine have their starting ends caught in the same position, another embodiment (Figs 9, 10) has offset traverse slots, the transfer slot 87, 89 from A to B being as before, but that from B to A comprising a portion 95 of the traverse slot A, as well as portions 94, 96, 93, 97 by which winding is commenced on package 1 from the left-hand end A'. The yarn is moved from one traverse slot to the other by guide 26, which may be mounted on a pivoted arm 24 (Fig. 1) or on a motor-driven belt 81 (Fig. 9). To produce a rapid change-over, an additional retractable guide 101 may be provided, on which the yarn catches as the guide 26 is moved, and which is then withdrawn pneumatically or by a solenoid to allow the yarn to move rapidly to its new position. Additional, guide bars 113, 114 (Fig. 14) carrying stops 123, 124 may be arranged to rotate into position as a bobbin carrying cradle is withdrawn, to ensure that the yarn. is caught on a projection 125, 126, of the other bobbin to commence winding thereon.
