Abstract
Paper filler particles, e.g. pigmentary kaolinite or titanium dioxide, are coated with cellulose by precipitating the cellulose from solution on to the particles. The cellulose to pigment ratio may be from 1 : 30 to 1 : 3. Precipitation is achieved by acidifying, e.g. with a sulphuric acid-sodium sulphate solution, a xanthogenate or cuprammonium cellulose solution, or by dilution of a solution of cellulose in a concentrated salt solution. A slurry of 2 parts of pigment particles and 3 parts of water is added to the cellulose solution, and the solution mixed and added to a coagulation bath in thin streams with violent stirring. The precipitate is filtered, washed with 1% Na2S, washed, optionally bleached and filtered.ALSO:Paper filler particles, e.g. pigmentary kaolinite or titanium dioxide, are coated with cellulose by precipitating the cellulose from solution on to the particles. The p precipitate is filtered, washed with 1% Na2S, washed, optionally bleached and filtered. This treatment improves bonding between the particles and wood-pulp fibres.
