Abstract

In a machine for packaging stacks of sheet material in four webs of paper, the stacks are compressed and then fed between upper and lower webs, margin of which are bent over the sides of the stacks, and further webs are fed on either side of the stacks and stuck to the bent-over portions of the first two webs, there being a gap between successive stacks and the webs bridging the gap and being perforated between the stacks so that they may be folded in pairs over the leading and trailing ends of adjacent stacks. The stack P o is fed into the compression station by a conveyer 2 causing a photo-electric device to initiate compression of the stack by vertically reciprocating members 3, 4 provided with conveyers 8, 9 which pass on the stack to the position P touching a stop 13 which causes halting of the conveyers 8, 9 and return of the members 3, 4. A further stack is then introduced after a delay which creates a free space 43 between the ends of successive packages. As the stack passes through the packaging station to the position P 1 , webs 25, 26 (Fig. 1) of a slightly greater width than the stack are fed from rolls 23, 24 along the bottom and top of the stack and their margins are folded in by deflectors 32, 33. Webs 29, 30 (Fig. 6) are fed from rolls 27, 28 and are stuck to the edges of the horizontal webs by means of adhesive from sprayers 41, 42 situated upstream of rollers 38, 39 which press the webs together. The webs are perforated by devices 34, 35 (Fig. 1) and 36, 37 (Fig. 6) at intervals so that the lines of perforations are in the median vertical plane of the space between stacks. After two successive stacks are stopped in the positions P 1 , P 2 (Fig. 1), rectangular plates 45, 46 pivot about a vertical axis on hinges adjacent the end edges of the stack to tear the side webs along lines 44 and fold in the free portions of the side webs. Glue sprayers 51 on a support 59 are introduced between the stacks P 1 , P 2 and apply glue to the folded-in portions of the side webs. As the sprayers recoil plates 54, 55 tear and fold the projecting portions of the upper and lower webs against the inwardly folded portions of the side web by rotating through 90 degrees about horizontal axes.
