Abstract

1,023,722. Catamenial appliances. CARTIERE DI CAIRATE S.p.A. Aug. 30, 1963 [Sept. 1, 1962], No. 34324/63. Heading A5R. A sanitary towel comprising cellulose fibres enclosed in a folded cellulose wadding band and a gauze wrapper is made by grinding cellulose board, conveying the ground board in an air current to the middle longitudinal section of a moving cellulose wadding layer, holding the sides of the layer over the ground board and cutting the pad so formed into predetermined lengths. The cellulose board is fed from a reel 1 to a hammer mill 3 where it is ground, the fibres so produced being withdrawn through a duct CS by a fan 4. The fan delivers the fibres in an air current through a duct CS<SP>1</SP> to the centre of a rotating drum 5. The drum has a peripheral gap over which cellulose wadding O from a reel 7 is guided by an endless wire mesh belt 6. Fibres entering the drum pass through the peripheral gap and are deposited along the middle of the band O as it passes round the drum, the air carrying the fibres escaping through the band O and the belt 6. The part of the peripheral gap in the drum which is not covered by the band and belt during generation of the device is closed by a belt 106 moving around rollers 77, 104, 105. The wadding band with fibres deposited thereon is passed to a conveyer 94 where the uncovered side portions of the band are wrapped over the deposited fibres to complete envelope them. The band is then passed to a cutting station 143 where is cut into pad lengths T by a rotary knife 145. The pad lengths are transferred to a conveyer 15 which runs at a higher speed than the conveyer 94 so that the pad lengths are spaced from one another. The pad lengths are transferred to a conveyer 10 within a tunnel 16 which carries tubular gauze. On passing out of the tunnel on to a conveyer 150, the pads are ensleeved in the tubular gauze which is cut between the pad lengths at a second cutting station 111. The finished towels have a free portion 17<SP>1</SP> of tubular gauze at each end.
