[Class 81 (ii) In a method and apparatus for manufacturing sanitary napkins having an absorbent pad body enclosed by a pervious wrapper with end portions extending beyond the pad body and a loop attachment sewn to at least one of such extending end portions the napkins are propelled transversely of their length with wrapper end portions projecting beyond the absorbent pad bodies a continuous length of tubular tape strip is fed into position extending transversely of the wrapper end portions and stitched thereto and subsequently severing the strip intermediate of the napkins to provide the loops. An absorbent pad 1 is wrapped transversely in a gauze covering or wrapper 2 having extending end portions 3 which are gathered and to which tubular lengths 5 of knitted yarn are applied with their lengths transversely of the ends 3 and stitched by a row of stitching 6. The length of tubular knitted fabric is then stretched and rolled so as to form a cord-like loop. Fig. 4 shows an apparatus for applying the loops. A series of trays 7 are carried by a conveyer chain 8, the trays being each of such dimensions as to accommodate a napkin with its gathered ends 3 projecting through slots 12. These gathered ends are adapted to traverse tables 13 and a roll 15 of knitted tubular fabric is arranged above each table and together with a guide roller 17, is driven at the required speed to feed the loop material to the ends 3 to which the material is stitched by a stitching arrangement 19. The trays then carry the stitched napkins through a severing device whereby the length of knitted fabric is severed intermediately of the ends 3. This severing device comprises a fixed knife 21 and a rotary one 20, the ends 3 with the stitched loop lengths 5 being guided by a guide 22 which normally prevents contact of the ends 3 with the knife 21. As the rotary knife 20 approaches the fixed knife 21 the guide 22 is depressed by a portion of the knife 20 engaging the cam surface 23 of the guide and the parts of the loop material intermediate of the ends 3 are depressed on to the knife 21 and severed by coaction therewith of the knife 20. The napkins with the stitched portions 5 are then delivered to a belt 25.
