Abstract

The invention comprises vat dyestuffs which contain (a) two anthraquinone residues linked together through an -NH-X-NH- bridge where X is the residue of a di- or polybasic organic acid, (b) at least one at most bicyclic arylamino group directly attached to an anthraquinone nucleus, the nitrogen atom of which must not be cyclic, and (c) at least one acid substituent imparting solubility in water which is bound directly to an aromatic nucleus. Such acid substituents are sulphonic acid, sulphato, thiosulphato and carboxylic acid groups. The dyes are made by sulphonating an appropriate vat dyestuff, by sulphating a vat dyestuff having a hydroxyl group, by condensing a vat dyestuff with an arylamine which may contain the acid substituent imparting solubility in water or by condensing two moles of an amino anthraquinone with a di- or polybasic organic acylating agent. Acylating agents include halides and anhydrides of sulphonic and carboxylic acids, halotriazines and halopyrimidines. Examples of the preparation of many vat dyestuffs are given, including those of the formulae. <FORM:1023705/C4-C5/1> and <FORM:1023705/C4-C5/2> The dyestuffs vat-dye cellulose fibres and are direct dyes for fibres of cellulose esters and ethers, polyesters, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyurethane, wool, silk and natural or regenerated cellulose.
